The internet is convinced that Deepika Padukone is playing Ranbir Kapoor’s mother in Brahmāstra

In the two months since its release, Deepika Padukone’s cameo in Brahmastra has become internet canon—and with good reason. While fans were left guessing when the makers teased a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it glimpse of the actor’s silhouette on the silver screen, the movie’s OTT release has added fuel to the fire with eagle-eyed netizens picking up on the star’s apparent cameo as the mother comforting a young Shiva on a stormy night before dying a tragic death in a fire.

That Padukone would make a cameo in the first part of the planned trilogy doesn’t come as a surprise, given the movie’s star-packed roster featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan in another cameo. Director Ayan Mukerji acknowledged in an interview, “I got very lucky that some of the best talent in the country not only liked those characters, but supported the overall vision of the project and what we are trying to create. I am very grateful to the entire cast for that support. It has made Brahmastra what it is today!” However, the auteur has been unsurprisingly coy about dodging questions about Padukone’s supposed cameo, “The image is so dark, I can’t see the face of this actor,” he quipped while Bhatt added, “I think, it’s what you want to see.”

At the moment, Padukone is slated to appear opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Pathan and an action flick with Hrithik Roshan in addition to producing and starring in the remake of The Intern. If internet conspiracy theories are to be believed, she will be essaying the role of Amrita in the second instalment that chronicles the lives of Shiva’s parents. If you were to plumb deeper into the corners of the internet, a faction remains convinced that Kapoor will also be essaying the role of his father Dev, which means that fans could soon see the much-loved Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani duo reunite onscreen. With the next instalment slated for a December 2025 release, we might have a bit of a wait ahead of us but endless theories to keep us company in the meantime.
